Grammar point

It's raining
It's my birthday tomorrow.
I wanted to write a note but my mom wrote it for me.

"It" doesn't refer to anything here. It's just a stand-in for the subject. "It" is the noun of the sentence, but it is not behaving as a traditional referent.

Standard English syntax requires a subject and a verb in each sentence, but some ideas become bogged down by this. To say for example, "The sky is raining," in English is obvious. However, English has evolved into very simple nouns and verbs (and all the rest). We don't deal in declensions anymore, and as our verb conjugation is comparatively very simple, it does sometimes lead to a few awkward structures.

In Spanish, we'd just say, "Está lloviendo." Verb + Gerund. The verb construction is third person singular and in that context just implies a state of being.

Or, in Latin, it would be "pluit", which can mean, "It rains" (habitual), "It is raining" (current action), or "It does rain" (emphatic). Alas, Latin is both awesome and at the same time terribly, terribly limiting.

Countable/ Uncountable Nouns

Some uncountable nouns in English are countable in other languages. This can be confusing! Here is a list of some of the most common, easy to confuse uncountable nouns.

Obviously, uncountable nouns (especially different types of food) have forms that express plural concepts. These measurements or containers are countable:

Exercise 2: Understanding a Song's Lyrics

Como às vezes é difícil achar em um site em português, sugiro que você digite o nome da música e do artista no Google seguido da palavra "lyrics", que significa "letra de música" em inglês. Desse modo o Google te trará logo a letra da música, ao invés de videos, fotos ou outra coisa. Agora responda essas duas perguntas: sobre o que é a letra e por que você gosta dessa música.

Estamos lendo em aula o documento famoso produzido por Eric S. Raymond, chamado How To Become A Hacker, que apresenta uma série de skills necessárias para se tornar um grande entendedor de informática de um modo geral. Paul Graham e Startups

Paul Graham é o homem por atrás da Viaweb, o primeiro serviço baseado em uma aplicação (ASP) que se tornou depois a Yahoo Store. Esta aplicação era um serviço de e-commerce, para as empresas montarem suas lojas online. Além de ser conhecido como hacker da linguagem Lisp (que usou para escrever o Viaweb), Graham também é famoso por apoiar as companhias Startup, principalmente as voltadas para venda de programas e serviços em tecnologia da informação.

Seu primeiro texto que eu quero compartilhar é o How to Start a Startup, o primeiro que ele escreveu sobre o assunto. Vimos que ambos os termos são usados de modo errado, ou pelo menos diferente do original Aqui convido vocês a explorar mais um pouco este registro da cultura da engenharia da computação.

Um dicionário Inglês-Inglês excelente, para você fazer aquela ligação da língua com a própria língua que é muito saudável pros estudos, eu recomendo o Dictionary Die.
